Advocacy and Legal Empowerment
IKEA pursues this through targeted advocacy and legal empowerment initiatives that challenge harmful laws and practices such as Intersex Genital Mutilation (IGM), promote legal recognition and accurate civil documentation, engage policymakers, opinion leaders, and the media to advance inclusive reforms, and provide legal literacy and support to enable intersex persons and their families to understand, claim, and defend their rights at every stage of life.
Empowerment and Economic Inclusion
IKEA promotes empowerment and economic inclusion by creating pathways for intersex persons to thrive socially and economically, thereby reducing exclusion and poverty. Through comprehensive life skills development, career guidance, and talent nurturing, alongside targeted economic empowerment initiatives and strengthened leadership and advocacy capacity, IKEA supports intersex persons to achieve sustainable livelihoods, meaningful employment, and active social participation.
Inclusive Healthcare and SRHR
We have a goal to ensure intersex persons enjoy safe, respectful, and inclusive healthcare throughout their lives. It is essential to advocate for consent-based, rights-affirming medical practices that end harmful and non-essential interventions. This includes equipping healthcare providers with comprehensive training on intersex variations, human rights, and ethical care, while delivering tailored Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) education and services that respond to diverse needs across the life course. Equally important is the integration of accessible mental health and psychosocial support, fostering dignity, autonomy, and overall well-being for intersex persons within healthcare systems.
Support Networks and Safe Spaces
This pillar strengthens resilience and a sense of belonging by ensuring intersex persons and their families are never isolated. It creates safe and affirming spaces, both digital and physical, where intersex individuals can connect, share experiences, and access reliable support. Structured peer support and mentorship programs empower intersex persons to build confidence, skills, and community ties, while targeted guidance for parents and caregivers helps families provide care, understanding, and advocacy, fostering environments of acceptance and inclusion.
Education and Awareness
We work to build an inclusive society that understands, accepts, and supports intersex persons from childhood through adulthood by developing and distributing accurate, intersex-inclusive materials that promote dignity and respect. We strengthen this effort by training teachers, schools, and communities, running sustained awareness campaigns to challenge stigma and misinformation, and advocating for policies and social systems that protect rights and ensure meaningful inclusion.
